 Ten Mile House, also known as the Stagecoach House, was built in the 1830's and used as a stagecoach layover on the road to Little Rock. It was located ten miles from Little Rock, which is why it became known as Ten Mile House.
During the Civil War, General Steele's Union Army occupied Little Rock and used the house as it's military headquarters. Confederate soldiers were held there as prisoners.
David O. Dodd, Arkansas' youngest Confederate hero, was captured by Federal troops in the woods surrounding the house/military headquarters. He was convicted of spying and held prisoner there before he was hung on January 8, 1864, at the age of 16. His trial and hanging took place in Little Rock, and he spent his last night at Ten Mile House in a small out building. His ghost is said to haunt the premises today.
The current owners report many paranormal events including hearing the voices of women singing softly on the empty stairway and the sound of invisible marching soldiers on the grounds where the last Civil War battle was fought in Arkansas. Many ghosts are believed to linger in this very historically significant place.
The Investigation: On June 17, 1994, Karen Shillings and her assistant director paid a visit to the owners for a preliminary interview. (red means make this a link to another page where I explain David Dodd or give the explanation of a term) Upon arrival, both women felt something foreboding in the home.
Walking the grounds, one could feel the presence of something unseen, something observing them. The owners spoke of how there were many nights that while lying in bed with the window open, they could both hear the sound of men marching across the grounds.
Once, the owner woke up to his dog snarling at the open bedroom door and he could hear the softly singing voices of women on the stairway. The piano in the front room would play while no one was in the room, which was found to be very eerie.
Of course, we decided that the location was indeed worthy of a thorough investigation and followups in the future. CASPR investigated the home off and on for several years.
